What is Documentary Family Photography?

Traditional family photos are a performance: matching outfits, a forced smile, someone looking away or blinking.

Documentary family photography is the opposite. I come to you and photograph your family’s real, unscripted day as it actually unfolds. The breakfast together, greeting grandma and grandpa at the door, a mischievous smile peeking around the corner; the real character that makes us human.

My background in newspaper photojournalism has honed a different skillset than the traditional family photographer. Nothing is posed. I'm not directing your day, I'm following it. That means on-location, coming to you rather than asking you to come to me. Spending real time with you and your family, not just a few minutes before moving on to the next appointment.

The result isn't a handful of polished portraits. It's a true record of a day in your life, the kind that memory alone won't hold onto for long.

  • Schedule a consultation with me and we will talk through your day and what matters most to you, so I know where to point my attention without getting in the way.

    This is where we’ll decide on project details and select the pricing tier appropriate for your session!

  • I arrive early, allowing everyone to get accustomed to my presence so that when I start photographing I can blend into the background, just a fly on the wall while you go about your day exactly as you would have if I weren’t around.

  • You get a curated gallery of the day's strongest images, chosen for how honestly and candidly they tell the story, not just for their technical perfection.

    Images created and edited are yours to keep! Every package comes with digital downloads and a print credit toward an album, wall art, and more

  • Being a part of YOUR day means I come to you, so travel is included within 50 miles of Westminster, CO. Longer distance or out-of-state travel is also available for the big occasions, just reach out to info@brandoniwamoto.com and we can discuss details!

Photos capture what a day looked like. A Chapter captures what it sounded like, too.

Real voices, the sound of breakfast, the story your dad tells at least once every visit.

I mic your family up during the photography session, then edit that audio together with the images into a short film built from what was actually said and happened. Not quite a highlight reel, not quite a home video, but rather a short collection of authentic moments you'll want to experience again and again.

It's called a Chapter because it is just one small part of your family's greater ongoing story.

  • Documentary family photography means photographing your family as your day naturally unfolds instead of posing for a traditional portrait session. This can take place at your home or anywhere else of your choosing - it’s your day and I’m just along for the ride.

    Documentary family photography is built on photojournalism techniques: capturing real moments as they happen, without direction or staging.

  • A standard session is typically an hour, happens at a set location like a park or studio, and produces posed portraits. A documentary session runs much longer (often most of a day), takes place wherever your family actually is, and produces candid, story-driven images rather than posed ones.

    It’s a lot less work for you than a traditional family photo session, and the images you get are the kind that stir genuine emotions rather than simply show off your matching outfits.

  • Documentary photography requires significantly more time on-site, travel to the client's home or event, and a different skill set from traditional family photography. The adaptability to read a scene and anticipate spontaneous moments are skills built through photojournalism experience rather than studio posing.

  • Yes. Because this work happens wherever your day is happening, travel within 50 miles of Westminster, CO is included, and sessions further out are available for the right occasion.

  • A Chapter is an add-on to your photography session that takes the photos I’m already creating and turns them into a video keepsake, making your photos go further and giving life to images that you love but might not necessarily print and put on a wall.

    I mic up your family to capture real voices and ambient sound throughout the day, then edit that audio together with photographs into a short film. It’s just one part of your family's ongoing story, turned into a unique way to look back on the day.

  • Nothing is deliberately staged on my part, so there's nothing to "get right."

    While some families might tidy up the house beforehand, others may decide it’s part of the charm of “today.”

    I’ll ask you to go about your day as normal. I'll stay out of the way, follow the natural flow of what's happening, and photograph it as it comes. What you do during your day is entirely up to you!
