Beyond the Barbed Wire

In 1942 in response to the Japanese attack on the U.S. Military base in Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted Executive order No.9066, which resulted in the "evacuation" of over 110,000 Americans of Japanese descent into a number of War Relocation Camps across the West.

In March of 2009, a group of Colorado State Unviersity volunteers taking part in an "Alternative Spring Break" project set foot on the sands of Manzanar, the most famous of those WWII-era Internment Camps.

The following photographs, video and story document the experiences of those volunteers from Fort Collins, Colo. in their journey to keep the memory of those who were interned in the deserts of California 65-years ago alive.
